Program Notes

Tiento artfully endeavors to harmoniously blend and embody various interpretations of its title word. It draws inspiration from multiple sources, starting with the capricious 15th-century Spanish and Portuguese musical genre, loosely analogous to the fantasia. Additionally, it draws from the style of organ music from the 16th century, characterized by sustained organ-like sonorities while also embraces a slower style of flamenco guitar music, portrayed through the pairing of detuned harp and guitar. Beyond these musical influences, Tiento embraces various translations and meanings of its title, suggesting emotions of touching, trying, caring, and seducing.
