Duo Diorama (Minghuan Xu and Winston Choi)

Program Notes

Prisma, composed between June and August of 2006, showcases an intriguing approach where the violin and piano unite as one cohesive instrument or sound world. The foundation of the composition stems from the acoustical nuances of the lowest (G) string of the violin, serving as the point of departure for a capricious and non-linear exploration. Throughout the piece, the material unfurls in a shimmering, reflexive, and shaded manner, revealing contrasting, sudden, and even contradictory aspects.

While the motivic and gestural topography may evoke elements reminiscent of the "classical" theme-and-variation structure, commonly found in repertoire for this duo combination, the material is ingeniously fractured into fragments. Rather than presenting it in its entirety, the work blossoms from these broken sparkles, weaving an enchanting mosaic of sound.
