Bio for concerts

Felipe Lara was born in the state of São Paulo, Brazil in 1979, begun his musical career as guitar player and shortly after started composing. In 1999 Lara received the “European Tour Scholarship” from Berklee College of Music, where in 2002 he obtained his Bachelors Degree with Magna Cum Laude distinction, dual major in Musical Composition and Film Scoring. In addition to the studies at Berklee with John Bavicchi and Vuk Kulenovich Lara studied at the New England Conservatory with Alla Elana Cohen. In 2004 Lara received his Masters in Composition and Theory from Tufts University where he studied with John McDonald. Additional lessons and masterclasses with Brian Ferneyhough, David Rakowski, Helmut Lachenmann, Marco Stroppa, Michael Jarrell, Philippe Leroux, Wolfgang Rihm, and Yan Maresz. Lara received awards such as "Der Staubach Preis" from the International Musikinstitut Darmstadt (Germany), Youth Concerts at Symphony Hall, the Richard Levy Award, MTNA/Warner Brothers award, AMC, ASCAP, MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music, Sichuan Conservatory of Music (China), Dal Niente chamber ensemble, and the XVI Bienal da Musica Brasileira Contemporanea. Lara has recently received commissions from the Berkshire Symphony, Donaueschingen Musiktage, Duo Diorama, New York Miniaturist Ensemble, New York New Music Ensemble, International Contemporary Ensemble, and Jean Kopperud. Lara ’s music has been performed in many festivals including Darmstadt, Acanthes, Wellesley Composers Conference, June-In-Buffalo, 26th New Music and Arts Festival, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Domaine Forget, Bienal da Musica Brasileira Contemporanea, Festival de Musica Nova, and others. Lara’s Music has been performed by the Arditti Quartet, Le Nouvel Ensemble Modern, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), New York New Music Ensemble, Duo Diorama, Radnofsky Saxophone Quartet, Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira, and the Julliard Pierrot Ensemble. Lara is currently a PhD candidate at New York University (GSAS) where he studied composition with Louis Karchin, Mario Davidovsky, and Elizabeth Hoffman, as well as computer music with Elizabeth Hoffman and Cort Lippe. Additional studies in composition, computer music, and orchestration with Tristan Murail, as well as interactive composition with George Lewis, at Columbia University. Recently the Arditti Quartet performed his first string quartet Corde Vocale in the United States, Brazil and Luxemburg. His second string quartet Tran(slate) received the Staubach Preis from the 44th International Courses for New Music, Darmstadt. The version without live-electronics was premiered by the Arditti Quartet in Blonay (Switzerland). Following a short residence at the Experimentalstudio Freiburg (SWR) with the assistance of Michael Acker, the version with live-electronics was premiered in Darmstadt by the Arditti Quartet and the Experimentalstudio Freiburg (SWR). In 2010 Peter Eötvös and the Radio Chamber Orchestra Hilversum will premier of a new orchestral work commissioned by Donaueschingen Musiktage for their 2010 festival. Lara lives in the New York City area.

Lara is currently a PhD candidate at New York University (GSAS) where he studied with Louis Karchin, Elizabeth Hoffman, and Mario Davidovsky. Additional studies in composition, computer-music, and orchestration with Tristan Murail at Columbia University, as well as lessons with Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann, Marco Stroppa, Michael Jarrell, Wolfgang Rihm, and Yan Maresz. His second string quartet < Tran(slate)> was the winner of the 2008 Staubach Preis in Darmstadt, Germany after the premier performance by the Arditti Quartet with the live-electronics of the Experimentalstudio SWR Freiburg. Two CDs including Lara's music will be released in Brazil in the Fall of 2008. In 2010 Peter Eötvös will premier of a new orchestral work commissioned by Donaueschingen Musiktage for their festival.

Recentemente sua música foi apresentada na Alemanha, Argentina, Brasil, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Luxemburgo e Suíssa por conjuntos tais como o Arditti Quartet, Berkshire Symphony, Duo Diorama, International Contemporary Ensemble, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin e New York Miniaturist Ensemble. Atualmente Lara é Doutorando na New York University onde estudou com Louis Karchin, Elizabeth Hoffman, e Mario Davidovsky.Também estudou composição, orquestração, e informática musical com Tristan Murail na Columbia University, e teve aulas com Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann, Marco Stroppa, Michael Jarrell, Wolfgang Rihm, e Yan Maresz. Seu segundo quarteto de cordas < Tran(slate)> foi o vencedor do Staubach Preis em Darmstadt, Alemanha, após a estréia realizada pelo Arditti Quartet, com a eletrônica em tempo real pelo Experimentalstudio SWR freiburg. Serão lançados no Brasil, até o final de 2008, dois CDs com obras recentes de Lara. Em 2010 o maestro Peter Eötvös realizará a primeira audição de uma nova obra para orquestra encomendada pelo Donaueschingen Musiktage, na Alemanha.
